Prof Justiaan Swanevelder
Professor and Head of Department of Anaesthesia
Prof Justiaan Swanevelder MBChB (Stell), DA (SA), FCA (SA), MMed (Anes), FRCA, completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa. He underwent specialist training at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town.
From 1995 until 2012 heConsultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care (mainly adult and paediatric cardiothoracic anaesthesia, and perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography) at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, UK. During that time he was Director of, and developed the one-week hands-on Glenfield Perioperative TOE Course.
He is an enthusiastic undergraduate and postgraduate teacher. He was been a Royal College Examiner for the Primary and Final FRCA exam for 8 years. At that time he was elected ACTA Committee member, and became member of the Joint TOE Accreditation Committee of the Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists and British Society of Echocardiography, co-developing the UK TOE Accreditation Process. Associate Editor for Echo Research and Practice Journal, Reviewer for BJA, Paediatric Anaesthesia, SAJAA, and others.
